Denzel Washington apparently believes in the adage, happy wife, happy life.

And the Oscar winner is opening up about some crucial keys to life and it includes knowing that his wife and Queen Pauletta Washington, runs things in his home. The venerable actor revealed to PEOPLE his recipe for marital success after securing 35 years under his belt and it’s pretty simple. He said:

“I do what I’m told. I keep my mouth shut,” he joked to People magazine.

Washington is breaking bank right now, dominating the box office with The Equalizer 2, which took top number one spot over the weekend. He talked about how his wife has been the cornerstone who did “the heavy-lifting” and now he sees the fruits of a happy family.

“What pops into my head: security, food, a beautiful home. The difference between a house and a home, it’s a big difference,” Denzel told People.

“You can buy a house, but that doesn’t make it a home—and not to say a man can’t make a home a home, but my wife has made our house a home, and raised these beautiful kids [John David,33, Katia, 30, twins Olivia and Malcolm, 27] and protected them and sacrificed for them, she did the heavy lifting.”

Washington proved he’s still a winner this month, with his latest flick, The Equalizer 2 reigning supreme at the box office over the weekend despite the fact that Mama Mia: Here We Go Again opened the same weekend.
