Lewis, a longtime Georgia Democrat, was hospitalized after he fell ill Saturday aboard a flight to Atlanta, where he was slated to attend an afternoon event,WSBTV reports. The congressman’s spokeswoman, Brenda Jones, said he was under routine observation.

Lewis released a statement saying that tests were completed. He thanks all the well wishers who sent their support, while wishing him a speedy recovery.

Since he was first elected in 1986, Lewis has represented Georgia’s 5th District, which comprises much of Atlanta. He played a pivotal role in the civil rights movement and in 1965 marched on Selma, Alabama, with Dr. Martin Luther King.  Images of what became known as “Bloody Sunday,” showed Lewis being assaulted by heavily armed state troopers, propelling support for the Voting Rights Act. Lyndon B. Johnson signed the measure into law a few months later.

In 2011, President Barack Obama gave him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

Keeping Up the Fight

Don’t expect the 78-year-old to slow down now. He’s been a roll these past few months, speaking out against President trump’s immigration policies and keeping up the good fight he’s been long known for.

Earlier this month, Hundreds of thousands of protesters gathered nationwide to share their determination to fight the Trump administrations heartless decision to separate families seeking asylum.

And in Atlanta, John Lewis was ready to inspire protestors with a message honed over the years as he marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and others.

“Look, you know, I’ve been talking for some time and getting in trouble. It’s time for some of us to get in good trouble, necessary trouble,” the venerable Democrat told the crowd at the Families Belong Together rally in Atlanta.

We’re sure once he gets some rest, Lewis will be out there fighting on the frontlines once again.
