John Legend says rappers supporting Trump are new supergroup ‘called the Sunken Place’
John Legend blasted the rappers who endorsed Trump for thinking 'meanness' is strength
Over the last few weeks, hip hop fans have been stunned by Black male rappers who’ve opted to publicly endorse Donald Trump‘s bid for re-election. Now singer John Legend has come forward with a clever new nickname for these men who he believes have lost their way when it comes to politics and the advancement of the Black community.
Monday evening, while performing at a Biden-Harris campaign event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Legend took some targeted digs at fellow musicians while addressing the crowd.

“Now, some people see the meanness, the bullying, the selfishness of Donald Trump and they mistake it for strength, a kind of twisted masculinity,” explained the politically active father of two. “Some see his greed and they mistake it for being good at business.”
“Some of your former favorite rappers have been taken in by these lies,” Legend continued. “I think they even founded a new supergroup, it’s called the Sunken Place” – this last comment being a clear a reference to the Jordan Peele‘s blockbuster movie Get Out which used horror to examine the ways Black people lose themselves while pandering to the whims of their white counterparts.

“But Trump’s Platinum Plan for Black folks is nothing but fool’s gold, because you can’t bank on a word he says,” he added, referring to the proposal revealed by the Trump administration last month for the Black community, which made headlines after being linked to rapper Ice Cube.
“Ask the students of Trump University. Ask all of the contractors he stiffed. Ask people his charity was supposed to help before it was shut down for being a fraud. Ask all the Black and Brown Americans who are dying from this virus and losing their jobs under his watch.”
“The president isn’t strong,” Legend continued. “He’s a coward.”
Legend continued to blast Trump for his governance.
“His career in business and in government has been failure after failure after failure,” he concluded. “We need a president we can trust. That’s the kind of president Joe Biden will be. And he won’t only reverse the damage of the last four years hand-in-hand with Senator Kamala Harris, they will build back a better economy and country than ever before.”
