Oscars nominations 2022: ‘King Richard,’ ‘West Side Story’ earn multiple nods
Will Smith and Aunjanue Ellis earned nominations for their “King Richard” roles, while Denzel Washington was recognized for his turn in “The Tragedy of Macbeth”
Awards season is in full swing, and this morning the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences officially announced the nominations for the 94th Annual Academy Awards.
This year, the Academy announced the “biggest voter turnout in 94 years,” making today’s nominations announcement one of the most exciting yet. The film slate is filled with some major competition, with movies like King Richard, West Side Story and Dune earning Best Picture nominations after captivating audiences throughout the year.
Various performances stood out as well, including Will Smith as Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena Williams in King Richard, Ariana DeBose as Anita, the iconic role Rita Oreno won an Oscar for in the original West Side Story, and more.
Elsewhere, Denzel Washington also earned a Best Actor nomination for his role in The Tragedy of Macbeth. Aunjanue Ellis, who had a stand out role opposite Smith in King Richard, has recieved a Best Supporting Actress nomination.
