Black cemeteries

An abandoned, historic Black cemetery in Central Florida will be restored thanks to a half-million-dollar grant from state officials. 

The graves of more than 500 African Americans were discovered at an AME church in Delaware. The bodies were buried between 1848 and 1945.

Protests took place on Friday outside of Oaklawn Cemetery, the Tulsa, Oklahoma site where bodies were exhumed last year.

Many Black Americans excluded from white-owned cemeteries built their own burial spaces, and their descendants are working to preserve them.

Rodney Hawkins has taken on the task of preserving his family history after finding the Hawkins’ family cemetery in disarray.

The Florida Senate unanimously voted to create a task force that identifies and preserves Black cemeteries across the state.
