Issa Rae Carved Her Own Path to Stardom

Feb. 29, 2024 – 01:38 – In celebration of Black excellence this February, we here at theGrio recognize the significant contributions of Black individuals in entertainment, film, television, and beyond. We continue Keeping Black History Alive by spotlighting award-winning actress, writer, and producer, Issa Rae. Issa Rae was born in Los Angeles to a pediatrician and school teacher. It was in school where Issa got her start in acting, participating in the drama department. She would later create, “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl” in February 2011 and would plant the seeds for the HBO show she would eventually create and star in, Insecure. Since the release of Insecure in 2016, the show has received critical acclaim. The series received 8 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including the category of Outstanding Comedy. Issa has created a path for herself in Hollywood and works to elevate other voices #KeepingBlackHistoryAlive
