10) “99 Problems” – Jay-Z

This cinematic, black & white video (featuring cameos from Rick Rubin and Vincent Gallo) was critically acclaimed but turned off some viewers with dogfighting scenes and an ending that showed Jay-Z being struck with a hail of bullets.

9) “Jesus Walks” – Kanye West

Although intended as a positive ode to his spirituality, the Biblical images mixed with cross burnings upset some audiences.

8) “Gutta Time” – Master P

Following a lengthy warning in its beginning that this video isn’t meant to glorify the KKK, Master P and friends take on gun-toting Klansman in a game of basketball. Odd? Certainly. Offensive? You be the judge.

7) “Baby Got Back” – Sir Mix A Lot

Incredibly tame by today’s standards, this homage to black women’s booties was actually banned for a time on MTV.

6) “Me So Horny” – 2 Live Crew

This song’s sexually explicit, and some would argue, offensive lyrics landed the hip hop ground 2 Live Crew in legal hot water and their video to the late night rotation on the cable networks.

5) “Window Seat” – Erykah Badu

Had Badu simply stripped nude in a guerrilla-style one-take video that would have been plenty scandalous. But by shooting it in Dallas at the location JFK was assassinated and ending it with her own execution, this clip was bound to cause a sensation.

4) “Black or White” – Michael Jackson

The King of Pop’s buzzworthy clip was memorable for its (at the time) advanced morphing special effect and celebrity cameos (Macauley Culkin Cheers’ George Wendt). But it also caused a firestorm because of its finale, in which Michael Jackson repeatedly grabbed his crotch while performing a sexually suggestive solo dance.

3) “Tip Drill” – Nelly

This incredibly misogynistic music video unabashedly portrays women as little more than sex objects. One scene literally features Nelly swiping a credit card through a woman’s buttocks.

2) “Hate Me Now” – Nas featuring Puff Daddy

This video’s crucifixion imagery was so controversial, Puff Daddy demanded footage of himself on the cross be removed (images of Nas as Christ remained). When the wrong version aired on MTV, Diddy allegedly attacked Nas’ manager with a champagne bottle.

1) “Like a Prayer” – Madonna

So ok, obviously Madonna is white—but this infamous video featuring the material girl getting frisky with a black Christ figure is arguably one the most controversial videos ever made.
