TheGrio Heroes are about the everyday Black heroes in our world. Some have been working unheralded for years and others are emerging. What they all share is a determination to make a significant impact on our communities and humanity.

These individuals have demonstrated outstanding goodwill and achievements for the benefit and welfare of Black people, leading by example through service and solutions with compassion, dedication and determination.

TheGrio Heroes will be selected during an online nominations process by our Grio community. Our community will tell us about the heroes in their community who impact and change lives every day.

There will be three rounds of judging from a select set of editorial and independent judges. Seven independent semi-final judges who are leaders and industry experts will select the top 10 honorees.

The public will vote for a winner from the 10 honorees.

TheGrio will amplify the winner’s story and provide information on their work and how others can support them.

We are looking for community leaders of African-American descent that are doing amazing things to make the world a better place. To be nominated, individuals must legally reside in the United States or the District of Columbia (excluding Guam, Puerto Rico and all other U.S. and foreign territories and possessions) and be thirteen (13) years of age or older as of the beginning of the nomination period.

Their nominating accomplishment must have occurred on or after December 1, 2021.

Only individuals meeting all eligibility requirements set forth in these Official Rules may be nominated to be a 2023 Heroes’ finalist.

Nominations open on March 1, 2023, and close at midnight on May 1, 2023—only one nominee per submission. Self-nominations are permitted. Nominations for individuals or representatives of a group are eligible for consideration. Finalists will be notified in June 2023.

Nominations will begin on March 1, 2023  and run through May 1, 2023.

Look in your community, your field of work or the news. Who inspires you? Who are the everyday Black heroes and leaders dedicated to the community and the culture. They may be someone working unheralded in their field for decades or others who are emerging. What they all share is a determination to make a significant impact on our communities and humanity.

Any individual (a) legally residing in the United States or the District of Columbia (excluding Guam, Puerto Rico, and all other U.S. and foreign territories and possessions); (b) who is thirteen (13) years of age or older as of the beginning of the Nomination Period; and (c) whose nominating accomplishment occurred on or after December 1, 2021, is eligible to be nominated for TheGrio Heroes.

Only individuals meeting all eligibility requirements set forth in these Official Rules may be nominated to be a 2023 Heroes’ Finalist. Groups, organizations, and employees of theGrio are ineligible for consideration. Self-nominations are permitted. A team of journalists at theGrio will conduct the first round of evaluations. Seven independent judges who are comprised of leaders and industry experts will conduct the second round of evaluations. The last and final round of assessments will be conducted by you, our community, to help us identify the 10 most outstanding individuals to be named TheGrio Heroes for 2023.

Due to the high volume of nominations, theGrio staff cannot respond to each individual submission. If we choose your nomination, we will contact you and your nominee through the contact information provided.

We need as much information as possible. Please make every effort to provide as much contact information as possible. At a minimum, we must have a website with contact information or an email address and working phone number to contact the nominee.

Yes, There is space on the nomination form to submit additional information. Please do not submit any additional information to theGrio unless requested.

No. Please just submit one concise nomination. Multiple nominations have no bearing on whether a person will move forward or be chosen by our judges
