Eight months after he resigned as one of President Obama’s environmental advisers amid a political storm over his alleged ties to 9/11 conspiracy theorists, longtime Bay Area activist Van Jones is still considered politically toxic by conservatives.

California GOP gubernatorial candidate Steve Poizner uses Jones’ name in TV attack ads as shorthand for “radical.”

But Jones returns this week to the Bay Area, where progressives will honor him Thursday, with a new direction: He has realized that his true calling is not in the White House but outside politics, where the best-selling author believes he can be more effective.
