KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The NAACP is honoring Academy Award-nominated actress Cicely Tyson as it wraps up its annual convention in Kansas City.

Singer Toni Braxton is scheduled to perform Thursday night when the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People gives Tyson its Spingarn Award for distinguished achievement. Tyson starred in “Sounder” and “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.”

The convention started Saturday, and highlights have included the passage of a resolution condemning racism within the tea party movement. Tea party organizers quickly disputed its claims of racism and asked the NAACP to withdraw the resolution.
