From NBC Philadelphia:

One of the most familiar voices on Philadelphia radio was silenced Tuesday as Karin Phillips — KYW Newsradio’s community affairs reporter — died suddenly following a brief illness. She was just 53.

Phillips spent more than three decades at Newsradio. Her career at 1060 began as a production assistant in 1979 and she would go on to do everything at the station from reporting to writing to editing, according to CBS Philly.

“Karin’s news beat kept the Philadelphia region aware of all the unique organizations, programs, and events that make a difference in our community,” said a remembrance on CBS Philly’s website.

A graduate of Rutgers University, Phillips taught broadcast journalism at the school in recent years.

Before working at Newsradio she reported for the Burlington County Times and worked for Express Traffic Services.

The native Philadelphian was also a member of the Philadelphia Flying Phoenix Dragon Boat team, which raises money for the fight against breast cancer, and helped with charitable work through the team. She also sang in the Christian Bell Choir, which performs at locations from local churches to prisons.
