From NBC Chicago: The victim of an early Sunday high-rise fire entered the building less than five minutes before the first fire companies arrived, NBCChicago has learned.
Video cameras in the lobby at 3130 N. Lake Shore Drive show Shantel McCoy, 32, walking into the building at 2:05 a.m. The first firemen arrived at 2:09 a.m. McCoy entered the elevator and rode to the 12th floor, where the fire began, unaware that a raging inferno would greet her when she arrived.
It is believed she was killed instantly when the doors opened.
McCoy, who reportedly moved to Chicago less than a year ago, apparently got on the elevator with a bag of takeout food to go home.
The fire also injured nine other people, including two firefighters.
“When the first companies arrived on the scene, they had fire blowing out of the 12th floor window,” Chicago Fire Department Chief Joe Roccasalva said.
