WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says President Barack Obama is aware of the ongoing trial of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, a Philadelphia doctor on trial for murder in the deaths of seven babies and a patient at his clinic.

Gosnell is charged in the deaths of seven babies and the 2009 overdose death of a 41-year-old patient. Authorities allege the babies were killed using scissors.

White House spokesman Jay Carney says that while Obama is aware, as president, he “does not and cannot take a position on an ongoing trial.” But Carney adds that “the things you hear and read about this case are unsettling.”

Several patients and about a half-dozen former employees have testified about outdated, dirty — and allegedly deadly — conditions at Gosnell’s clinic.
