Deadly street violence erupted in the Kenyan port city of Mombassa, after gunmen shot a Muslim cleric and three others to death there Thursday night.

Two raids in two countries net two of the world’s most-wanted terrorists

The cleric’s supporters allege that the shooting was a reprisal by Kenyan security forces for last month’s attack on Nairobi’s Westgate Mall that killed more than 60 people. 18 people are still missing following that incident. A Somali Islamic extremist group, al-Shabab, claimed responsibility for the mall attack. Another cleric at the mosque had been accused of aiding the group’s recruitment efforts before he was gunned down last year.

What appears to be escalating violence in the wake of the Westgate Mall attack highlights concerns about that part of the world. TheGrio asked NBC News’ Ron Allen to briefly tell us why we should closely watch what’s going on in Somalia and with al -Shabaab.
