Controversial NFL cornerback Richard Sherman is someone who is known for speaking his mind.

The recent Super Bowl champion has weighed in on a proposed new football rule which would penalize football players for using the n-word.

“[Banning the n-word] is an atrocious idea,” Richard Sherman told Sports Illustrated‘s Peter King. “It’s almost racist, to me. Why wouldn’t all curse words be banned then.”

Sherman went on to take the position of many young African-Americans that there is a difference when the racial slur ends in an ‘er’ versus an ‘a.’

“It’s in the locker room and on the field at all times,” Sherman said. “I hear it almost every series out there on the field.”

Sherman was subjected to a wave of criticism following a particularly histrionic post-NFC championship game interview. After frequently being labeled a “thug,” Sherman compared the word’s use unfavorably to the n-word.
