Childish Gambino: I'm better than Drake

theGRIO REPORT - Childish Gambino said "I definitely feel I’m better than him" in regards to fellow artist Drake during an interview with Peter Rosenberg for The Grammy Museum’s Spotlight series.

Childish Gambino said, “I definitely feel I’m better than him,” in regards to fellow artist Drake during an interview with Hot 97’s Peter Rosenberg for The Grammy Museum’s Spotlight series.

Childish explained his music career may have been limited and somehow obstructed by the fact that he is very similar to Drake. He also added that he feels he works harder than the Young Money emcee and performed his new single “Sober” for the first time, reports Billboard.

When a fan in the audience asked him a tough question about hating Drake, Gambino answered:

I don’t want people to think that I hate Drake. I don’t hate Drake at all. I really like Drake, if not for no other reason than he makes me better. He really does. I had to fight that all the time. I knew when I was doing Childish Gambino from the beginning, like, ‘They’re not gonna let me do this. They already have a rapper, singer, actor guy who’s Black.’ That’s really what it was. ‘If he was White, it would be different.’ They’d be like, ‘They’re not the same.’ It’s very specific. I don’t dislike Drake. I think he’s a really good writer and rapper. Right now I definitely feel I’m better than him, only because I’m working harder than him right now. If he came in and was like, ‘Let’s rap.’ I’d be like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna kill you.’ [Laughs] But, right now. Maybe he’s got something up his sleeve.

It was a confession Childish Gambino made about the rap industry — paying tributes in rap is also about trashing your colleagues a little bit.

Childish is indeed a polyvalent artist. Many know him by his real name, Donald Glover, and from the hit comedy series Community, where he played Troy. He gave up that project in order to focus on rap.

His newly released album, Because The Internet, was very successful online, and he has been preparing for his Deep Web Tour, which starts at the iHeartRadio Music Festival September 20.

This isn’t the first time Childish has called out Drake, Hip Hop DX notes. At a July 27 concert, he named several other artists, saying:

I’m the best rapper, definitely Top 5. If these other rappers think they’re [inaudible], they’re f***in’ not alive. I’ll cut their head off, that’s every rapper living. That’s Kendrick, that’s Drake, that’s ScHoolboy, that’s everyone. I don’t give a f***.

He concluded with: “‘This n***a think he Drake.’ Nah, I ain’t Drake. I sing better, I do better, my s**t’s wetter.”

During the The Grammy Museum’s Spotlight series interview, he also talked about the mixtape he is about to release, STN MTN/Kuai Gambino, and he performed four of his songs, including “Sweatpants” and “Sober.”
