A surveillance video released by Fort Lauderdale police on Tuesday shows officers and Miami Dolphins player Derrick Shelby having a conversation prior to Shelby’s arrest and tasering.

The physical altercation between Shelby and police offers was not captured during the six-minute video.

Shelby, 25, was arrested on Saturday after an off-duty officer saw the defensive end “touching women without their permission.” Upon being asked to leave, Shelby became antagonistic according to the police report, dropping into an “aggressive fighting stance,” according to CNN.

The video obtained of the incident shows Shelby speaking to officers outside the nightclub around 1:49 AM, according to the video’s timestamp. In an official statement on the matter, officers indicated that they repeatedly asked Shelby to walk away and leave the nightclub.

Shelby, appearing intoxicated, refused, after which he was informed by the officers that he would be arrested for criminal trespassing.

The police’s affidavit states that, “Upon attempting to place Shelby into custody, he began pushing away from officers and took an aggressive fighting stance. Shelby was placed on the ground, where he was actively resisting and attempting to brace his arms to defeat efforts to place him into custody.”

An additional report on the matter indicated that Shelby — who weighs 282 pounds — was “overpowering officers,” thus necessitating the use of a Taser to subdue him. The first shot from the stun gun proved ineffective in doing so, as did the second; a third finally allowed the officers to cuff and arrest Shelby.

According to witness reports, Shelby wanted to get back into the Cyn Nightclub in order to “face his accuser.”

Following the incident, Shelby was suspended by the Dolphins for “conduct detrimental to the team.” The third-year reserve defensive end, an undrafted 2012 free agent out of the University of Utah, has been suspended indefinitely and is not expected to play when the team faces the Green Bay Packers on October 12.
