A routine social studies class in a Chicago suburb turned ugly for some middle school students this week.

The students, four 13-year-old eighth graders, say their substitute teacher repeatedly directed racial slurs at them.

NBC Chicago’s Nesita Kwan reports the dialogue began with a substitute teacher at Jay Stream Middle School calling the students “African-American.” According to Mae Thompson, that  didn’t sit well with them because none of the students the teacher was talking to are “from Africa.”

“I’m Jamaican,” Thompson told Kwan.

The teacher said it was the politically correct term to use and then offered the N word as an alternative.

“Back then, that’s what African-Americans were called,” the teacher allegedly said.

At one point, the teacher also referred to the students as slaves, which prompted one of them to throw down their books and cry. School officials told Kwan the teacher will not be invited back.

The teacher has reportedly corroborated the student’s version of events.
