The first family welcomed little leaguers from Chicago’s Jackie Robinson West team into the White House Thursday.

The players were understandably awestruck.

The team toured the White House dressed in their jerseys and took pictures with the president. They also presented the president and first lady with their own jerseys and gloves.

President Barack Obama told the kids that it was important for them to pave the way for other kids to follow their examples and to stay in school and work hard. Michelle Obama emphasized exercise and health.

White House photographer Pete Souza posted a few photos of the encounter to his Instagram page:

The Jackie Robinson West team has brought a national Little League championship and a source of pride to the often-struggling Far South Side of Chicago.

“The big thing for the kids is the idea that their circumstances don’t determine their ceiling,” Little League volunteer Bill Haley said. “They are the best in the United States. These kids — really humble kids — are the best in the United States.”
