Officer Michael Doherty, a 16-year veteran of the Boston police, was placed on paid administrative leave after his alleged assault of an Uber driver Sunday.

At about 2:45 am Sunday, the Uber driver reported to officers that a man who was his passenger, later identified at Doherty, had assaulted him and had used several racial slurs during the assault, reports The Boston Globe.

Doherty allegedly become agitated when the Uber driver took him the wrong way, so told the driver he was in the wrong place, followed by “What, you think I’m stupid, you [expletive],” and a racist term for Latinos.

Doherty urged the driver to keep driving but then repeatedly hit him until the driver got out. After that, Doherty chased the driver around his car. The driver waved for help until someone stopped, and then Doherty got in the Uber vehicle and drove off.

The driver and the man who offered assistance followed Doherty until he got out and asked the man who helped, “What do you want, you [expletive],” using the n-word.

Doherty then knocked the driver to the ground and kept hitting him as the other man attempted to pull him off. He fled when officers arrived.

Doherty has been banned from using the ride-sharing services of Uber.
