A Georgia teacher was killed by her kidnapper after a car chase that led police across state lines Thursday.

Authorities say Sandra Barnett was kidnapped by her husband’s lover and taken away from her home in a black Dodge Durango.

Barnett was a beloved special needs teacher at McNair Middle School in Decatur. According to neighbors, she had recently replaced the lock on the fence to her backyard because she suspected someone had been tampering with it.

Authorities say the kidnapper led police on a chase that crossed over into Alabama. As State Troopers and other law enforcement closed in, the kidnapper stopped the car, reached for a gun and shot Barnett.

She then shot herself. When law enforcement officials approached the car, they say both of the women were dead.

The suspected killer has not been officially identified, although Barnett’s husband indicated it may be his girlfriend.

According Atlanta TV station WXIA, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation is now in control of the case.
