Chief Steven Jones and Officer Donald Givens from Trinity Police Department in Texas posed together for a picture months ago in response to the Black Lives Matter movement, but recently, that image has been shared on social media thousands of times.

The image shows the two officers, one of whom is black while the other is white, with the words “His life matters” written on their hands, with arrows pointing at each other underneath the written message.

On Thursday, Chief Jones said of the movement, “I don’t want to put down law enforcement all together, but … there’s so many things that are happening these days that sometimes we can’t stand behind officers that do bad things. However, the community and the nation can’t condemn every single officer based on the actions of a few.”

While their intentions may have been noble, many in the community still take offense to people co-opting the message of Black Lives Matter – which is meant to highlight brutality against oppressed people, not re-affirm the already valued lives of those who have oppressed them.
