Straight Outta Compton has enjoyed massive success at the box office, earning $200 million worldwide and making its name as one the highest-grossing films by a black director.

The film, directed by F. Gary Gray, follows the story of the N.W.A. rap group and its members Eazy E, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. It also made history when it became the highest-grossing R-rated August opener ever. The movie opened at $60 million and stayed at the number one spot in the box office for three straight weeks.

As of Monday, the huge success has netted Universal a domestic gross of $161.1 million, and international gross will be $38.9 million, and the film will be the seventh this year to earn the studio $200 million.

The Hollywood Reporter and several other media outlets are citing Straight Outta Compton as the highest grossing film from an African American Director.

However, after taking a closer look that’s not the case.

Peter Ramsey’s Rise of the Guardians took in $306 million worldwide in 2012, and 2003’s 2 Fast 2 Furious, directed by John Singleton made $236 million worldwide.

As it stands Straight Outta Compton is the third highest worldwide grossing film by a black director.
