A California high school student was killed because of a disagreement over a music video on YouTube, according to the young man’s mother.

Deston Garrett was 19 years old at the time he was shot and killed. He was hanging out with his friend, Fredrick Marshall, 23, on June 9 when they decided to watch the music video, and they got into a disagreement about the video.

Garrett had been excited about the video because it had been viewed multiple times recently, and he wanted to show his friend his accomplishment. However, the two began to argue about the video until Garrett eventually asked Marshall to leave. Marshall then allegedly shot Garrett, according to deputies, and fled before authorities could arrive.

Although Garrett was rushed to the hospital, he died two days later, which was about the time he would have graduated from high school.

“My son died over a freaking view on a song on YouTube,” Garrett’s mother, Tanya, told the news station KTXL-TV.

On Friday, Marshall was booked by Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies on suspicion of voluntary manslaughter, and he has been ordered held on $100,000 bail.

Also on Friday, hundreds of people gathered for a memorial service for the young man.
