Gladys Knight’s son is fighting a legal battle to keep her name on the Atlanta restaurants that he runs, and his latest attack comes as he questioned her “mental capacity.”

Gladys Knight filed to have her name removed from Gladys Knight’s Chicken and Waffles after her son, Shanga Hankerson, was arrested and charged with felony theft because he failed to turn sales taxes over to the state.

However, Hankerson’s attorney, Dana Tucker Davis, said that her client believes his mother is being misinformed about both the state of the restaurants and his role in what happened.

“Everyone makes mistakes, and one of the mistakes Shanga made is not being as hands-on in day-to-day management as he should have been in the last couple of years,” Tucker Davis said before going on to say that the restaurant had everything in order after paying their taxes, getting good health inspection scores and reordering some management positions.

The response from Hankerson concerning his mother’s allegations that he was harming her brand and her name because the restaurants were assumed to be affiliated with her because of her name and memorabilia was filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Atlanta.
