A woman in Lumberton, North Carolina, only just escaped her flooded home, as the water destroyed not only her house but her car. Her two horses, one of which is pregnant, are also missing.

Joni Gaddy was rescued by her son, who drove all the way from Texas because he was worried about her, and her nephew.

Gaddy said that while she was trapped in her home, she could see alligators and snakes swimming in the water outside. She said that she spent her time praying that the creatures outside would not get inside and that someone would find her.

Although she hung sheets out of the window to try to catch the attention of the helicopters that she could hear, it wasn’t until her son fished her out of the neck-high water that she was found.

Gaddy said that she wouldn’t be returning home, even if she could: “I just don’t think I can.”
