Teacher’s note complaining about oil in a student’s hair sparks outrage

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Tionna Norris had absolutely no intention of giving in to a teacher’s demands that she stop using so much coconut oil in her daughter’s hair.

Her daughter has beautiful, natural hair that is kinky-curly and needs moisture in order to be healthy. But Norris received this note from her daughter’s teacher, which she posted online alongside a picture of her daughter’s hairstyle: “I understand the necessary of coconut oil on Amia’s hair, but please do not use as much. The children were complaining that her hair “stinks.” If you have to apply this daily — please do so lightly, so the kids don’t tease her. Thank you for understanding.”

In her caption for the photo, Norris made it clear that she had no intentions of changing her daughter’s hair, writing, “*applies the same amount of coconut oil* y’all gone feel that black girl magic. Sincerely, unapologetically black mom. P.s. Coconut oil has no stinky smell.”
