Michelle Obama says Harvard-bound daughter ‘still a baby’

Michelle Obama seemed less willing to accept the fact that her little girl is growing up, insisting, "She's still a baby."

This week, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama graced the cover of People, and during their interview for the magazine, they spoke not only about the legacy of the last eight years but also about their family and personal life.

They admitted that Sasha and Malia Obama were ready to take on the world after the White House… and ready to get out of their parents’ house and their shadows.

“They’re ready to get out, just out from their parents’ house,” President Obama admitted. “The fact that their parents’ house is the White House may add to it. But Malia’s going off to college. She’s a grown woman.”

But Michelle seemed a little less willing to accept the fact that her little girl is growing up, insisting, “She’s still a baby.”

But even as the girls are looking forward to the future, it will still be hard to say goodbye to the place they’ve called home for eight years.

“There’s a sentimentality about this place, that they’ve had so many amazing experiences, and the staff are part of the family,” the president said. “It is different for them than for most kids in that when they leave, they won’t be able to come back home. Malia’s spoken about how she regrets the fact that she won’t have that home base in the same way.”

“They’re ready to get out of the nest. We don’t think they’re ready, but they certainly think they’re ready.”
