PriceWaterhouseCoopers has issued an apology after a mix-up at last night’s Oscars ceremony results in La La Land being announced as the winner of the Best Picture category when the real winner was actually Moonlight.

Only moments after presenter Faye Dunaway announced La La Land as the winner, the mistake was rectified.

“I want to tell you what happened,” presenter Warren Beatty said when it became clear that a mistake had been made. “I opened the envelope and it said ‘Emma Stone, La La Land.’ That’s why I took such a long look at Faye.”

PwC has since issue an apology not only to the two presenters but to the casts of both films.

“The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected,” the firm said in a statement. “We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred.”

“We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and [host] Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation,” they added.

After the apology was issued, all Oscar night tweets and pictures made by Brian Cullinan, the managing partner for PwC’s business in Southern California, who was backstage with the second briefcase, were taken down.
