The summer blockbuster starring Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish and Jada Pinkett Smith, is director Malcolm D. Lee‘s top opening earning film and Packer’s third film to cross the $100M after Ride Along and Straight Outta Compton.
The female-centric flick’s latest feat is especially noteworthy as comedies haven’t faired too well this year.
According to Deadline, Universal knew it had a hit on its hands on when audiences during early testing laugh so hard that you couldn’t hear all the jokes.
But Girls Trip isn’t just a domestic hit, it’s doing quite well abroad. The comedy topped the box office in South Africa for two weekends in a row with close to a half million. It also made $7.4M in the United Kingdom and could even surpass Get Out, which made $12.7M. The film will also be released in Australia and Romania on Aug. 31, with additional markets in November.
