Trio allegedly searched through obituaries to rob mourners at funerals

Three thieves in Rochester, New York, have been charged for a series of car break-ins that allegedly targeted people at funerals.

The two women and one man would allegedly go to pubic places and wait for people, particularly women, to leave personal belongings behind in their cars before breaking in, according to Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn. They would then use prostitutes to pose as the theft victims to use their credit cards.

The sheriff said that Bruce Newton, age 39, and Cearra Campbell, age 20, and Chelsea O’Hare, age 23, had broken into dozens of vehicles over the past few months.

What’s more, Newton, who was reportedly the mastermind of the operation, would allegedly go through obituaries in the newspapers and target mourners.

“This might seem like a regular old smash and grab,” Livingston County Sheriff Tom Dougherty told reporters. “But when you are targeting folks that are at the time the lowest, grieving over a family loss, and they come out to smash the windows… You can imagine, not only now are they grieving, but now they are upset.”

“All crime is significant however, some crime in particular is despicable,” O’Flynn said. “To target individuals at a vulnerable time in their life while attending a funeral is just plain reprehensible.”
