So I was looking at an X-ray of Kim Kardashian’s butt the other day…. No seriously, I was. And maybe you saw it too. It was the culmination of an unusual and perverse debate: is Kim K’s butt real or fake? Call off the investigation Diane Sawyer, because Kim Kardashian has thrown down the gauntlet of truth. Congrats to you Kimmy, your butt is a natural made national obsession.

Were you surprised, incredulous or annoyed by the solution of this “mystery?” I vote for the latter two, mainly because I couldn’t tell you what an x-ray of a fake butt would look like anyway. But I do know this — the butt thing has gotten way out of hand.

Fact is, big booties have been around since the dawn of time, but it wasn’t until one arrived on the backside of a famous Latina that pop culture became obsessed with the derrière. Interestingly enough, no one ever questioned the origin of Jennifer Lopez’s rear, but when Kim Kardashian banked her career on a sex tape and a big booty, eyebrows were raised. How apropos to flaunt an asset that doesn’t seem to naturally occur in Armenian culture…surely she bought her celebrity in a tony Beverly Hills plastic surgery facility.

But alas, it is real. Stereotypes be damned, big butts come in all colors, races, creeds, and even genders (sorry fellas). Now that we’ve put the Kim Kardashian booty rumor to rest, what other plastic surgery myths can be revealed?

As crass as it would be to X-ray a person to verify their “realness,” it could relieve the unrealistic standards of beauty that have been promoted by Hollywood and maintained by our gross consumption of all things celebrity tabloid. Even though it’s commonly understood that the road to fame is paved with nips, tucks and botox, it’s still positively controversial for a celeb to admit that they’ve ever bought their beauty.

It’s these lies that leave average folk thinking that if they just ate a diet of wheatgrass and air they too could be as svelte as Halle Berry, or bounce back to their pre-baby body only 6 weeks post-partum. We could be this beautiful if only we tried harder, no?

True some people are just born that way. But a lot of other’s are paying for it and lying about it. And maybe Kim’s bold profession of genetic physical traits was a bit unnecessary and definitely unsolicited, but at least she can put those rumors to rest. Now to see if other celebrities will rise to the X-ray test. Should we anticipate a booty X-ray trend? Can we expect more medical confirmations of who’s real and who’s fake?
