Students in Florida are receiving what some might consider an odd back to school gift: belts.

To remind youth of Florida’s ban on saggy pants, Democratic State Senator Gary Siplin is handing out free belts to students returning to school this fall.

Siplin who pushed for the law to be enacted told Reuters, “We want our kids to believe they’re going to college, and part of that is an attitude, and part of that is being dressed professionally.”

The belts, donated by a local church, were were handed out at three Florida schools by the senator.

Both the ACLU and the NAACP says laws against sagging pants target minorities. In addition to Florida, Arkansas and cities within Metro Atlanta have adopted similar laws.
