Thanks to a rotary club in Minnesota, a Kenyan boy has his sights set on a whole new life.

Moses Mwaura has lots of energy but has spent the first five years of his life with eyesight problems. But Rotarian Tim Murphy brought him to the twin cities for one week for life changing eye surgery.

He’s a celebrity in the United States. He’s famous. Murphy showed the family the Minneapolis newspaper coverage of Moses’ operation.

Murphy joked to Moses’ mom, that her son’s Minnesota hosts wanted to keep him.

“Her answer brought tears to my eyes. It was why didn’t you keep him. And it wasn’t lack of love for him. It was a possible future, him not having to return to marari valley and the slums,” Murphy said.

Of course Moses had to go home.

Even Cindy Murphy, Tim’s wife, sends her support to Moses.

“I really hope the best for him. I really want to see him again,” Cindy said

With more assistance for Moses, the Murphy’s believe they have found a private donor within rotary to pay for a private school for Moses in Nairobi.

When Murphy saw him one final time, a month later — after checking on other rotary projects in Africa. His eyes still straight and his few words of English still true.

“Thank you Minnesota, Moses said.”
