CLEVELAND, Ohio — The city has condemned the Cleveland house where celebrated 20th century writer Langston Hughes lived during high school.

It’s the latest twist for the 120-year-old house on East 86th Street that has been vacant, slated for renovation and nominated for landmark designation.

A nonprofit community group bought the house last October after it had gone through foreclosure, and plans to renovate the house so a family could live there. The property was nominated for landmark designation in March, but the recent threat has caused the Cleveland Landmarks Commission to rush efforts to seek City Council approval.

Christopher Busta-Peck, a youth services librarian in Cleveland, last year brought local attention to Hughes’ connection to the house. “I think that this can really serve as [a] point of inspiration to the students of this city to say that look, these are the conditions that this person lived in — and yes they were tough,” says Busta-Peck. “But he dealt with adversity and he became a better person for it.”
