TheGrio’s 100: Tamron Hall, anchor pressing newsmakers on national issues (VIDEO)

This Texas native has a cable television home on MSNBC’s NewsNation with Tamron Hall, where she has established herself as a diligent reporter and an engaging interviewer, unafraid to press a wide-ranging roster of newsmakers on the issues of the day. Tamron Hall has a devoted following both on-air and on-line, and is herself devoted to a very personal cause — domestic violence prevention.

Hall’s fight with domestic abuse is personal; her sister, Renate, was murdered in an apparent domestic violence incident in 2004. After Renate’s death, the hard-hitting journalist aligned with Day One, an advocacy group that raises awareness for and supports survivors of teen dating violence. Hall shared her story on theGrio in October, National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the same month Tamron launched her new show on MSNBC.

Tamron Hall is making history … by chasing down stories for a national audience. As a daytime anchor on MSNBC, Hall interviews policy-makers and pundits about the issues facing Americans.

“I want to continue building a successful news program with my NewsNation team,” Hall told theGrio. And as Hall’s success grows, so does her ability to advocate against relationship violence; less than a week into hosting NewsNation, Hall featured two leaders from Day One to discuss their experience with domestic abuse.

What’s next for Tamron?

Hall will continue to deliver the news on NBC and MSNBC, whether on NewsNation or Today and Weekend Today, where Hall frequently substitute hosts. “We want to take the show on the road to reach the nation,” said Hall in a recent e-mail, referring to her day-to-day viewers.

On black history …

“Everyday I reach a new goal is a celebration of my family’s black history. My grandfather had a second grade education and was a sharecropper in Texas. He never imagined a woman, let alone a black woman, could reach the level of success I am so proud to have accomplished,” Hall told theGrio. “To know his granddaughter is living her dream I pray has him smiling in heaven. My family consists of proud black men and women who are no different than many other families across the country. I celebrate them both aloud and in silent prayer everyday.”

A little-known fact …

A recent New York City Teen Health Risk Survey found that one in 10 teenagers had experienced physical or sexual assault in a dating relationship within the previous year. Even more startling, it tells that nearly 1,400 teenagers call the New York City Domestic Violence Hotline each month.
