Donna Hawkins, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman, said that 22-year-old Jessica Tata has been charged with reckless bodily injury to a child. Prosecutors want her held without bond, though she has not been taken into custody yet.
Houston firefighters battled a fire at a home in Houston shortly after 1:40 p.m. on Thursday. The house also serves as a day care facility called Jackie’s Child Care, said officials.
Units arriving at the scene found two injured children outside the home and five more trapped inside. All of the victims ranged in age from 18 months to 3 years old.
According to neighbors, Tata was not home at the time of the fire. They said they saw here pull up with grocery bags before realizing the home was on fire. She allegedly tried to save the children but the smoke was too heavy.
A memorial to the children has been erected outside the home.
