TheGrio's 100: Chazz Darby, 10-year-old chef promoting healthy eating

While many of his peers are stuffing their faces with junk food, 10-year-old Chazz Darby is in the kitchen with his mother creating recipes filled with fruits and vegetables.

Darby, who lives in South Florida, published a healthy food cookbook in 2010 with his mother, entitled My Own Food, a cookbook designed for children to use under the supervision of an adult.

Darby’s mother wanted to find a way to get Chazz interested in eating healthier food, and she figured working with him in the kitchen would spark his interest in trying out new recipes.

“I had to create a way for him to eat vegetables and fruits by incorporating it into everyday meals,” his mother said.

The result: healthy but tasty dishes, including a banana wrap, sweet potato muffins and baked fries.

Chazz Darby is making history … as a role model for children to eat healthy in a world where sugary, preservative-filled foods are heavily advertised to and consumed by an increasingly obese generation.

What’s next for Chazz?

Darby continues to promote healthy eating to kids everywhere.

A little-known fact …

Approximately 17 percent of children in the U.S. are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
