This week, the rap world continued to wait with baited breath for the release of Eminem’s new album. Â Will it be a return to form? Â A disappointment? Â No one seems to know, and folks were jumping on every leaked track with the intensity of Talmudic scholars. Â But during the wait, plenty of dope music (including some by Em himself) came out, and here are the highlights.
5.  “Sim simma, who got the keys in the Bimmer?/Who see police in the mirror?” — Joey Bada$$, ‘My Jeep’ lyrics
Joey’s timing in the release of this track was pretty bizarre, as he was arrested almost immediately after it came out. Â That being said, this section punning on Beenie Man’s “Sim Simma” was noteworthy for the comic consequences of the kind of fast, reckless driving that shows up in so many songs.
4.  “I’m the master of disaster, with a Masters in charisma/And a PhD in chutzpah; that’s some Jewish sh*t — what’s good, brah?” — Stan Ipcus, ‘Cap’ lyrics
While we don’t know of any universities that offer graduate classes in charisma, we’re glad Stan found an educational opportunity suited to his needs.
3.  “I entered as a menace to society/Now we spending every second drunk, and I’m a menace to sobriety” — Emilio Rojas, ‘Ziggy’ lyrics
Sometimes it’s the simplest puns that work the best. Emilio’s joke works great and sounds unexpectedly funny and fresh.
2.  “East Side, man, I got so many memories/They done arrested my whole development — Mr. Wendell, Tennessee” — Dee-1, ‘The New Orleans Freestyle’ lyrics
Dee’s shout-out to 90s alt-rap godfathers Arrested Development made us smile, and working in the names of their two biggest hits sealed this lyric’s place on our list.
1.  “Used to be my fiance/’Til you sucked on Wayne, Andre, and Kanye/Lebron, Akon, Jay, Lil Jon, Raekwon, Ma$e/Polow Tha Don, Drake, Dante Ross, James Conway, Kwame” — Eminem, ‘Love Game’ lyrics
Em’s verbal acrobatics are to be expected by this point. Â But the comic overload of names here, and its randomness (Dante Ross! Â Kwame!), pushed this lyric to the top this week.
