Pastor Michael Walrond filed to run against Democratic Rep. Charlie Rangel for his seat in the House as New York’s 13th Congressional District in October, listing his current address in New Jersey.
On his FEC candidacy form, Walrond listed an address in Edgewater, N.J. as his current residence. According to N.Y. state law however, you can run for office while living in another state. Candidates must only live in the state they run for after they have been elected to the region.
Rangel, 83, announced his bid for reelection to the Harlem district in December. He has served in the House for 42 years.
Walrond currently serves as Senior Pastor of Harlem’s First Corinthian Baptist Church and also serves as the National Action Network’s director of ministers division.
A spokesperson from Walrond’s campaign brushed off the detail, saying he has done “tireless work” for the district, according the NY1.
