Kelly Rowland: 'I'm back in the studio and extremely excited'

Saturday at the 9th annual Jazz in Gardens, Kelly Rowland delivered one of her best live shows ever.

The Grammy-winning songstress performed some of most notable hits including, “Motivation,” “Like This,” and “Dirty Laundry,” as well as a stirring Destiny’s Child medley, to a packed crowd of attendees at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens.

In an exclusive interview with theGrio’s Chris Witherspoon, Rowland talked about her return to the stage, and what it feels like to perform Destiny’s Child songs without her former group mates Beyoncé and Michelle at her side.

“I think now I’m pretty much used to it,” Rowland said of performing solo. “We haven’t done any performances together in a while. But we have so much fun when we perform together, and I think we find ways to of course make it our own in our individual performances.

Arguably the most memorable of the night was when rapper Nelly appeared onstage alongside Rowland to perform “Dilemma,” the Grammy-winning hit the pair released more than a decade ago.

“I asked [Nelly] to stop here, and he came by. I’m just so happy that it was surprise,” Rowland said. “I kept it a surprise because I wanted to do something special for Miami. I live here, so I have to.”

Rowland added that following their successful Jazz in the Gardens performance, she would be willing to collaborate with Nelly for another installment of “Dilemma.”

“I asked [Nelly] to stop here, and he came by. I’m just so happy that it was surprise,” Rowland said. “I kept it a surprise because I wanted to do something special for Miami. I live here, so I have to.”

Recent rumors have circulated that Rowland has parted ways with her record label Universal Republic. Despite reports, the “Survivor” singer revealed that she’s back in in the studio working on new music.

“I’m back in the studio,” Rowland said. “I’m extremely excited about being back in the studio. The ideas and everything that I have on my think board is just really amazing.”
