2013 wasn’t just the “year of black film” it was also a benchmark for African-American movie attendance.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Motion Picture Association of America estimates that more than 170 million African-Americans attended movies in 2013, a 13-percent increase from the year before and the first significant bump since 2009.
Still, Latinos account for the largest portion of box office receipts of any group. They account for 25 percent of all ticket sales.
This past year saw the release of several popular African-American-themed films like The Butler, 12 Years a Slave, The Best Man Holiday and  42 (just to name a few).
However, research is inconclusive about whether this uptick in so-called “black films” was behind the spike in African-American film-going.
But the fact is minorities make up the largest portion of American filmgoers. Only 54 percent of whites went to the movies last year, even though they make up 60 percent of the population.
