According to the St. Louis County Police spokesman, a Ferguson police officer was shot Saturday evening.
The officer did survive, and police are still looking for the suspect. It is not clear if the shooting was in any way related to the ongoing protests in Ferguson.
Protests have continued in the streets of the Missouri town since Michael Brown, an unarmed black teen, was gunned down by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. Wilson has yet to be arrested or charged, which has fueled the continuous demonstrations.
Protests heated up again Thursday after Police Chief Thomas Jackson apologized to the group of demonstrators for his department’s missteps after Brown’s shooting.
“I’m sorry, and I said that from my heart,” Jackson said. “I had to get that off my chest. It’s been sitting there for two months.”
“It’s never been the intention of the Ferguson Police Department — or any police department that I know — to intentionally target individuals because of race,” said Chief Jackson.
However, his words were not well received, as one demonstrator with a bullhorn called for his resignation.
