COMPTON, Calif. (AP) — A woman who allegedly buried her newborn daughter alive near a Compton riverbed has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and child abuse.

Thirty-three-year-old Porche Washington entered the pleas Monday and was ordered held on $1 million bail. The charge carries a potential life sentence.

Los Angeles County authorities say she tried to hide her pregnancy, but she gave birth at a hospital in late November. She was released a few days later, and a day after that, her daughter was heard crying near a Compton bike path.

Authorities pulled up asphalt chunks to find the child in a small hole near a fence.

The baby is in good condition at a hospital.
