A 28-year-old Cape Town woman was killed after turning down her ex-boyfriend when he proposed to her.
Nokuthula Thashe was doing laundry when her Zimbabwean boyfriend approached her and asked her to marry him. When she said no, as she had done for the past five years of their relationship, she was gunned down.

According to her mother, Sheila Thashe, Nokuthula was killed only days after having run away from the home that she shared with her boyfriend, with whom she had a volatile relationship. Nokuthula showed up at her mother’s house and asked to stay for the night.
“She asked me to give her a R50 so that she can pay for the transport to get all her things from N2 Gateway,” Sheila recalled.

“I gave it to her and she and a friend went to go and get it. When her things arrived, they smelled of petrol. He had thrown her stuff out of the flat. I gave her black bags to pack them into and she started doing the washing. I did not know it would be our last conversation.”
Sheila woke up on Friday to the sound of her daughter screaming for her as shots were fired. “I ran and she was lying on the step, barely breathing. There was almost no blood at all. She just lay there moaning as I called for someone to phone the police and an ambulance,” she said.
Police are still searching for the suspect.
