Grand jury declines to indict officer involved in Demarcus Semer shooting
A Florida grand jury has determined that the officers involved in the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Demarcus Semer were justified in their actions.
A Florida grand jury has determined that the officers involved in the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Demarcus Semer were justified in their actions.
A summary concludes that Semer died of a single gunshot wound to the lower right side of his back and that he may have been trying to avoid arrest for minor misdemeanor drug offenses.
On April 23, officers tried to pull over Semer, who allegedly refused to provide his license at first. Police say they spotted marijuana inside of his vehicle.
After refusing to get out of the car, authorities said, Semer reportedly put his car in gear and ran over one of the officer’s legs. That officer fired his weapon from just above the ground. The second officer, who eventually got inside of the vehicle, said Semer was trying to push him out.
The officer also said after hearing the initial shots by his colleague, he assumed it was Semer who fired the gun.
Moments later, Semer got out of the car and took off running. The second officer said Semer turned back toward him and raised one of his hands. The officer said he saw an object in Semer’s hand and fired.
When they finally reached Semer, his hands were empty, and his cell phone was found a few feet away.
Semer had no criminal record before his death.
