A teacher in Mueller Elementary School in Wichita has gone viral with another video of personalized handshakes with her students.
Jerusha Willenborg said that the personalized handshakes started when she was high-fiving and fist-bumping her 20 students at the end of the day when one of them threw in a little something extra.
“He added on to it. Then, everyone wanted a handshake,” she said.
That was three years ago, and Willenborg has continued the tradition ever since, making sure each of the kids gets a personal handshake. She took the tradition to Mueller when she started working there this year, too.
“It makes me feel like Miss Willenborg has my back,” said Harmoni, one of Willenborg’s students.
“The kids don’t always make good choices. They are amazing kids, but you know, they’re kids. At the end of the day, they give me their handshake, whether they had a good day or not, they leave that day knowing I still care about them,” Willenborg said.
Now, the students are making up handshakes between themselves as well.
“I made a handshake with one of the students here,” said Harmoni. “Her name is Navaeah. We’ve been practicing a long, long time. We do our handshake just because it’s fun.”
