The White House is backing off President Donald Trump’s promise to investigate the possibility of voter fraud during the 2016 presidential election.

Trump has continued to press the narrative that he lost the popular vote because of voter fraud, claiming that millions of people voted illegally.

“I will be asking for a major investigation into VOTER FRAUD, including those registered to vote in two states, those who are illegal and even, those registered to vote who are dead (and many for a long time). Depending on results, we will strengthen up voting procedures!” Trump tweeted out.

–President Trump is an egomaniac, and that’s no alternative fact–

However, it looks like the White House won’t be following through on that particular promise, as a senior administration official told CNN that the investigation was simply not a priority, though it might happen in the future.

It might be that the White House is backing away from the investigation because the public support for such a move simply isn’t there. This week, a Politico/Morning Consult poll found that only 1 in 4 Americans believe Trump’s claims of voter fraud. What’s more, those claims have been widely debunked from multiple studies, meaning Trump simply doesn’t have the support to keep up his claims.
