Shaka Senghor Talks OWN’s ‘Released’ and rebuilding life after prison

Shaka Senghor knows the power of redemption.

The New York Times bestselling author, educator and activist has dedicated his life to teaching others after serving a 19-year prison sentence for a murder he committed when he was a teen.

Now Senghor is using the wisdom gained from his journey to help tell the stories of other formerly incarcerated people.  Senghor visited theGrioLive to talk about being consulting producer for OWN’s latest docuseries “Released,” which gives an intimate look at what it takes to build a new life once someone is free.

In a nation that imprisons 2.5 million people across the country, the show is not only a heart-wrenching look at what prison does to people, but also highlights the injustice of mass incarceration.

Like Senghor, these brave people and their families teach us to rise and be empowered despite the pain.

Watch the full interview with Shaka Sengor above and watch “Released” Saturday nights at 10pm ET on OWN.
