Craig Melvin, the Saturday co-host of the Today show, is reportedly in talks to replace Matt Lauer after Lauer was ousted from his anchor chair at NBC over allegations of sexual misconduct.
According to Entertainment Tonight, the “MSNBC Live” host’s name has come up as NBC considers who best to replace Lauer with.
“This would give the network the opportunity to make Melvin into a star at NBC,” a source told ET. “This would be clean slate.”
Megyn Kelly, Hoda Kotb and “Sunday Today” host Willie Geist have also been floated as possible replacements.
Lauer was fired from NBC after multiple women came forward to accuse him of sexual misconduct. He has since issued an apology for his behavior.
“There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions. To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry. As I am writing this I realize the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC,” he said.
“Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed. I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I cherish dearly.”
